Song of Tarath I: Tiras

Contributed by fionndruinne on Wednesday, 26th May 2004 @ 06:01:59 PM in AEST
Topic: mythology

A tale I tell of times that were
Of olden days and olden heroes
The story that time has told.

In beginning-time was Tiras
Lord of the Tarath’s race
When yet they lived in lands afar
In the south-wind’s wide domain.

A wild land and warlike
Was this in times that were
And torn was peace with striving
‘Gainst terror-wielding warlords.

War-torn were the folk of Tiras
The fight had foully wrought on them
The women wept for husbands lost
Lonely in hidden forest-holds.

Abandoned they their former land
Their fields and folds they left behind
Fleeing from the wrath of war
But Tiras warded them from fear.

He led them on a journey long
Through lands far lost from Man’s memory
Through misty wood and wild hills
And at last to wild windswept coast.

Beyond the sea they saw the sheen
Of sunlight strong on verdant hills
Their hearts were struck with wonder
And love of a land unknown.

Thus they came to a fair island
In the country of the north-wind
That bore the breaking waves to shore
‘Pon beaches wide and bright.

Halls they raised upon a plain
Beneath the last of lordly hills
On it they lifted a lofty house
Taeg Vànmar, Tiras’ mighty hall.

Lord of a land unknown to men
Floating Far in the north-wind’s realm
Beautiful, beset with elden enchantments
This was Tiras now become.

Then he wedded a woman fair
Ceima of hair flowing and dark
Adorned with slender shining gold
That glowed in firelit hall.

Three sons had Tiras and his queen
Dark-haired Deol first
And Valad the Daring, his twin
After came Ardael, deft of harp-strings.

Tiras’ people prospered then
By the wide sea protected
Plowing new fields
Fair shone the sun upon them.

But from afar a darkness came
On sea-wings a fell fleet sailed
Sun glinted on rapacious spearheads
As evil men leapt to shore.

They attacked the town of Tiras’ folk
Terrible evil they wrought there
For they were many and fell
And their spears were swift.

The warriors of Tiras went against them
And Tiras with his war-keen sword
Long and weary wore that fight
But at last the raiders were routed.

Fled they from the wrath of the warriors
Into the wild hills they went
Their ships were burned upon the beach
And bright blades pursued them.

Now were the snows of Winter come
Cold and white was the wilderland
Far into the hills the foemen hid
And the warriors of Tiras waited.

The heart of Deol burned,
Truehearted son of Tiras
He went unto his smithy
While Winter’s winds cried.

With him were other craftsmen
Wrought they then many things
Mighty weapons for the war
And armament of fine working.

By the hand of Deol were made
Three great helms of iron
Three hauberks hard as adamant
And three swords, keen and cold.

These he gave, sword, helm and hauberk
One each to his father
And to Valad his brother
And one each he kept.

So the warriors of Tiras waited
For Winter to withdraw his hand
When the time came for war
They arrayed themselves on the plain.

Then came their foes from their hiding
Fierce and desperate they fought
From dearth they sought to escape
And death they met screaming in fury.

For long that fight raged
More men died than drew breath
A sea of foes broke upon spears
Of Tiras’ men standing like islands.

The king his cry resounded
Springing forth into the fight
Sweeping through the horde of foes
He was lost from his comrades.

The battle bore down upon him
Alone he sought to stay the swords
Slaying as swift as thought
But at last he was overwhelmed.

Deol and Ardael saw this
As nearby they fought together
Forward they strove to the place
Driving the foe from their father.

Destroyed were the raiders that day
Every man died upon the field
Not one saw their home again
Nor profited by their plunder taken.

Bright swords burned
On a dark day
When the warriors of Tiras fought
As their lord was struck down in battle.

"A sea of foes broke upon spears
Of Tiras’ men standing like islands."

How exacting and tumultuous this image was, as it needed to be, being the climax of this wholeheartedly immersive work.

I commend your persistence and dedication, Fionndruinne - it certainly is an admirable work. I like the way you spanned geographies and histories too- an essential ingredient in an expansive story for my liking. I much enjoyed the introduction too, it built the suspense adequately for me to get a little excited.

Here's hoping you get 'unintentionally' inspired some more ;o) and I get to read more from the lyre of Ardael.

Enchantment Strong!

Hmmmmm........
It's got too many words, and it's a wee bit too long, I admit. And I've seen this kind of thing in the Nibelungenlied before...

...have you ever heard of Sigemund before?

*jaw drops*

. . . I swear I'm going to get TMJ or something if you continue to write, with all the jaw-dropping it's causing.

Just . . . whoa. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, and I eagerly await the next installment of this tale. Skillful, eloquent (though personally, no offense, I sorta liked "In Golden Mist Fallen" just a biiiit better), and truly a poem crafted by a master poet :).

I take my hats off you for it's never easy to write mythological poetries. Are the characters and mythology of Tiras self-invented? Sounds like a game. Love it!

Andrew,

What a tale to be told! That was wonderful. I have never been much for Mythological poetry or stories, but you definitely perked my interest with this one. Greatly written, my friend. Bravo.
