My Conversation With Jack

I walked out side my door today.
Jack was sitting on my stoop.
Whistling his timeless song again
as he'd done the winter through.
"Do not whistle at me yet
until I put on my jacket
I'll be back sure you bet
then we can do some talking"
I killed the flowers Jack whistled
I turned the leaves to brown
"They'll grow back in the spring again
bright colors will abound"
I made the crops to wither down
they all bowed down to me
"But not before the harvest came"
I pointed out happily
I built my walls of snow like brick
I made paths slick with ice
"The sun melted your walls away
and the puddles took to the skies
All winter long I've been trapped in my home
like a rat in the maze of a cat
I was barely escaping the onerous duties
that circumstance laid on my head
my heart was e're frozen like a block of ice
and my troubles became like a stone
my brothers were pressing my love to the limit
freezing the marrow in my bones!
But look now Jack while we've been talking
the snow and ice melted away.
And your whistle has lost all its luster
I only need a sweater today
When summer comes you'll be gone
but the winter will come again
for now I'm going to my quiet place
to write of the things that we say"
Hear my whisper in the wind
feel my chill one last time
see the clouds turn grey before me
hear the icycles chime
I'll be back bringing cold again
as sure as Jack frost is my name
Just as spring and summer must come
winter shall be here again.
His voice faded into the wind
Leaves rustled on the ground
circling skyward before me
as Jack frost left with a bound.
I guess I'd best enjoy the summer
take each advantage I've got
today Jack was just whispering
In December he'll be howling a lot

I really liked the way you worked this out. Its a nice slant on the seasonal theme - and of course, I dislike winter, especially with the wind and sleet. A poem like this is sure to win me over.
Thanks for writing, Archie. |

Interesting write, as a conversation piece with the personification of winter. Jack frost is a fascinating character in himself. I'm not too sure of his origins but I enjoyed your portrayal. Stay warm!
