Love and Death

Contributed by Silent-No-More on Wednesday, 26th May 2004 @ 01:01:35 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

If Love and Death were to go
What would have become of Plath and Poe?
Would poets like these even have tried to rhyme?
Could they have done other things in their time?

If there was never Love or Death to know
What would the true artists’ masterpieces show?
Would they have found other muses so right?
Could they have understood dark and light?

If Love was absent and Death undone
What conversation would there be to inspire one?
Would the great orators still bother to speak?
Could they have offered only words empty and weak?

If never were Love and Death the same
What musicians would have never known fame?
Would we still need the music in our lives?
Could songwriters even one composition contrive?

If Love didn’t come and Death was forgotten
What awful news wouldn’t we have gotten?
Would our politics and crime be such a mess?
Could fear be greater or would it be less?

If Love never existed and Death were not there
What would fill up our dreams and nightmares?
Would we drift off each night into nothingness?
Could nighttime have been anything less?

If Love and Death were now washed away
What would then matter to us most each day?
Would we dare to try and would we wish?
Could we, without them, even exist?

I loved this poem. I think it is great. I never really thought about it before but if there were no such things as love and death how much would our world be different? Great write!

Now this I like. A strong rhyme makes this an enjoyable read, and I have to commend you for writing something so original and thought-provoking. Excellent work, my friend.

Impaled by the blade of apathy,

Top-notch rhymes, as per norm.
I think that we couldn't in principle, live without them, as if there were no love - humanistic reproduction would end, before death even had a chance to strike at any potential new life.

. . . i think. Stop confusing me! My brain hurts now . . .

Snem, when I first saw the title I was hesitant in even reading this. You know why? Yeah, my current life's situation with my sis.

I am so glad now I read it. This is an awesome poem. So thought provoking and it really shows just the way your inquisitive and brilliant mind works.

This one I'd have to give a standing ovation.

And I am assuming the questions are rhetorical. ;-}

*applauds*
