The Outer Shell

No matter what the color
Of a person's skin may be
Underneath the outer shell
Is a true identity
Still, we're taught to be like others
Trained to mimic and conform
So as we grow, we try to fit
Within the context of the norm
But within the norm belittles, accuses, and denies
And so, often fitting in
Causes us to compromise
We see things as others see them
Though we think our insight true
Through our blinders we pass judgement
On what others say and do
And if we're created equal
Then where's the harmony
Are the external components
How we base equality
If we could live as one
Yet, still live within ourselves
It would matter not the color
Painted on the outer shell
