You never saw it coming did you?
Such a delicate piece, cut glass, balancing a fragile peace of mind.
Contentment, so easily shattered by a slick self deception.
By a deft sleight of brain. Don’t look surprised, it’s true!
But self doubt is your true betrayal, not a kind
Unused to, but still such a dull diminution
Of all you had to give and so much less
Than you were or might have been.
So, now those eyes, lips, breasts, are surplus to demand,
Arms no longer required to hold or hands caress
A lover gone.A future like a mirage barely seen,
And too soon dissipated by a single soft command:
No more! Left unsatisfied, sated now by a longing for change.
So, let the abandoned one abound in that desire to run, to fly,
To see another face in the mirror without the memory or pain
Of that mired reflection, that same sad, displaced self to rearrange:
Take that girl out to the desert where she can wander off and die.
Let the sun blanch bones, bleach clean the soul and start again.

Nice poem. I especially like your rhyme scheme. Very inventive.
Good luck. |
