My father remembers the little girl
that I once was
And I remember the little things
between the anger and nothingness.
We are lost in time, trapped there without
the common sense or
present tense to change it.
Trapped as we were in the car that day,
upside down, scared, cold
Until he broke the glass and we crawled,
numb and silent up the hill.
He probably doesn’t remember that now,
perhaps he didn’t even then-
But I do - and I turn to it now and again
still unable to reconcile the day.
I imagine he knows only the yesterday
of some beach trip or holiday
Recalling the good behavior that he demanded,
numb and silent underneath.
He probably couldn’t see the truth now,
maybe he didn’t even then-
But I do – and I turn to it now and again
still trying to find my way.
My father remembers the little girl
that I once was
And doesn’t want to know me, now grown,
numb and silent no longer
He probably wouldn’t like me now
maybe he didn’t even then-
But I do – and I turn to it now and again
still pushing the pain away.
I’m left to remember the little things
that I wish I never knew
The look, the arrogance, the drink in his hand,
numb and silent enforcer
He probably doesn’t regret it now
perhaps he didn’t even then-
But I do – and I turn to it now and again
still wishing it some other way.

Fantastic. Very deep and expressive. My heart reaches out to you. I especially like the repition but I think my favourite lines would have to be:
"He probably wouldn’t like me now
maybe he didn’t even then-
But I do – and I turn to it now and again"
though they are all simply brilliant. A powerful and emotional write that I think deserves more attention.
Take Care

I've been back through the archives today, read many poems. This one wouldn't let me go.Why is it that a poem, with a content that is so obviously painful for the writer, attracts us.This one captured me,it is a wonderful poem. |

oh my goodness!!!! This one really tugs at the ol' tears. I have so much I want to say...but not here...not today.
I'll say this though....this one seriously brings on the tears and puts a lump in my throat.
Thank you ever so much for sharing this one.
Sincerely,

Despite the numbness and the painful feelings and experiences of the past and despite the vestige of that pain which still remains within you, that little girl you once were has grown and prospered into a powerful, self reliant force which ventures forth with confidence and grace. Sometimes the best work is rooted in the very events that hurt our hearts the most. The feeling I take away from reading this poem makes me wish I could take that little girl by the hand, kiss her forehead, hug her tightly and tell her that she is special -that she is a winner and that she is loved, perpetually and unconditionally.
