Christmas in the Sand
In some desert land far from my home,
Searching for the enemy as I roam.
The gun by my side comforts me on my way,
Helping ensure me of another day.
The inner sounds of the holiday cheer,
Gives way to chopper blades and my own inner fear.
What lies inside doorways questions the mind,
What dangers and perils am I to find?
Some people line streets and greet me with joy,
While others lie in wait intent to destroy.
Who is to trust and whom do I dread,
Sending terror and fear that’s so widespread.
My president sent me here to fight,
While some still protest that it’s not right.
I fight for my country and my fellow Marine,
Brotherhood, bonds of duty lies between.
A moment of sleep is now what I crave,
Or to lie awake and read the letters that I save.
Remembrance of Christmases past,
Wondering if this one will be my last.
My Christmas will be spent on a foreign soil,
Littered with despair among wells of oil.
No presents will my morning bring,
Nor joyous carols will thy sing.
I’ll wake the morning just like the last,
Looking down at my shadow, the desert sun has cast.
This is not how my life was planned,
Just my Christmas… in the sand.

i totally agree this is a great poem. i mean, war often makes ppl forget that soldiers are people too, but as well as making that clear, it show then unreal, sickeningly present sence of danger i guess a soldier wud be under. |
