Wonder what Poe would've wrote?!?

Contributed by reprobate on Saturday, 15th May 2004 @ 05:04:04 PM in AEST
Topic: didactic

Motorized ferries seem to float past
Islands of glass and steel and toil
Anchored along the asphalt rivers
Neatly carved from this planet's soil

'Midst these temples of greed and need
Life's played from it's stacked deck
Workaday puppets forcibly driven
This game of survival has us all by the neck

Terrible sad sagas of belief and hope
Acted upon with fervent non-chalance
No winners nor rules, at all, in this game
Just the players and their indignant provenance

The clock is punched, from pain of birth
Every tick shows a different leaning
The strings are pulled and the play begins
The last curtain revealing failure's meaning

That person shunned is you, beyond your petty schemes
Get a job, you slob, the brain-damaged reply
You might know the circumstance but not the man
And always, your sameness you still deny

As ever, the monuments of self are erected
The abuse of man conveniently left behind
Rushing headlong past care and necessity
Mine, all mine: the sad thought of a POOR mind

Take all that you have and put it in the pot
weigh it against the wants of other souls
If it's found lacking, would your deeds pay the game
Will you find peace in those wish-filled holes.
