Relationships are Fashionable (but I'm Single)

Relationships are Fashionable (but I'm single)

Everybody is in a relationship but me,
Me and Morrissey

My friends, they say I should always say I’m available
‘It never hurts to let them know you’re out there’

I’ve never felt less inclined to listen
I’ve never been so sure of my own view

I’m cycling in the Winter Morning,
With the newspapers still stacked by the shop-front

I’m cycling thru the park, and I see a young girl by the frozen river-side,
I wonder what her heart is like

I hope it is split and amazed by the colors of life

And for all the lovers and for all the kisses
This heart and mouth has known

I’m alone now
I’m alone

It’s very fashionable
To have a hand to hold
People prefer it
But I don’t care about what people prefer

Do you?
Would you?
Do you?

But in the dying of night,
The stars are still above for all of us

You can see them if you really want too
They don’t care if you are with someone else

They don’t burn for fashion
They burn to die

I’m cycling thru the park, I’m by myself in the rain
Listening to Suzanne Vega on my I-Pod

& I feel cold but I’m free
& I feel you but I’m me

Everybody is in a relationship but me,
Me and Morrissey

I go to an all-night café
Like any serious artist

The girl behind the counter,
She says:

How come all your poems are about the past?

And don’t you like my face?
‘Just say you like my face’

I say, you are like a tender ghost and I am the blade
& at 4.30 AM, what else can I say?

But honestly, it’s because the past was beautiful,
Because the past is so beautiful
It’s because the past is so beautiful

But even as I turn and go to leave
I catch the lie, in my own words

& I know I don’t really mean it

Because in the past I had bad friends
Who plunged knifes into this soft back
& I plunged a few of mine

& I had bad skin, and I didn’t have much money
It’s all sad but true, it’s sad but true

Just like I always say
People will use you when you’re young and foolish
Just like I always say
You will grow up and cut the strings

& then life will be much harder
Then life will be about earning your keep and cleaning your gun

& the bitter-sweet romance of not knowing your special one
Will become just boring

But I remember laughing with the hustlers
Playing our Nintendo games and caging dollars
From the passers-by

But I remember crying with the innocent
Listening to Violent Femmes and not moving on the couch, not meeting eyes
Our hearts paralyzed and our mouths so afraid

I wrote a poem called ‘Avert your Eyes’
It’s lost now, in the wasteland of time

We all looked so hard for someone else,
Little did we guess, questing hearts burn out and go cold

I know mine did,
I really don’t know about anyone else’s

That’s the trouble with staying single

You start not to care about those who give themselves
To wedding rings and birthdays and family holidays

They seem so happy, why begrudge them
But then again, why raise a finger, to help them?

But River Phoenix died too young,
Twisting outside the Viper Room

That took years to shake,
I felt a shadow cross my over my tomb

& I feel cold but I’m free
& I feel you but I’m me

Everybody is in a relationship but me,
Me and Morrissey

I look in the mirror and a part of me wants to go back
And change the world

But the rest of me screams

I must remain
I must remain
I must remain

Don’t look back, because the girl in the coffee shop
She has nice eyes, and she likes to play Smiths records

& because it’s only by working hard, that things will change

I can almost see into the future
Into the golden blaze of light and neon

I’m going to wind up in Japan,
That’s where I’m going
I’m losing myself in comic books,
I’m going to wind up in Japan

And you don’t need someone else
You don’t need someone else

To buy a ticket
To change your life

It may be nice, it may be sweet,
But believe me,

I can make it to the Sun by myself,
I can wash myself clean in the waves

& it’s no god I’m praying too
& it’s no girl that stole this heart
& it’s for no boy I want to be the only one

Oh no, this one’s just for me
With my bubble-gum pop taste
& with my electronic memories hidden inside secret message boards
Where people go by the names of saints and killers

I had to have one where I don’t mourn forever

The knives in my back are like pinpricks as I drive,
Sometimes I wonder if they are really there,

Sometimes I pull over by the road-side,
Crying in the midday sun

As they play our favorite song
From times gone now into the horizon

So please, I beg you, please don’t say I have no feelings,
That’s always hurts more than anything

Especially when,
As I have said before

Everybody is in a relationship but me,
Me and Morrissey,
Everybody is in a relationship but me.
