Margarita XXXII

Topic: StoryPoetry

Suggestion's made inspecting vessel's hold,
to see how hides are stored there deep and wide.
Done by ingenious method they are told.

"This sudden storm doesn't worry you, Captain?"
"I don't think it'll last long, sir. It should blow itself out within
twenty-four hours."
"Good! You'll sail Tuesday then."
"Sooner the better, sir."
"Captain, I'd like you to meet my good friend, Senor Arracho Huerra, owner of
Rancho de Plata. We do much business together."
Captain Thompson shook hands with the smaller man. Smiling he said, "I know
Mister Huerra of course. Who doesn't know the master of de Plata? He's well
known for judgement of horses and cattle."
"Thank you, Captain Thompson. May I congratulate you on your new command.
Don Hernandez must think well of you to entrust such responsibility to so
young a man."
"Sea makes a man grow up fast, Mister Huerra. It can be a cruel master but does
have its compensations."
"To be sure, Captain Thompson. To be sure."
Don Hernandez now spoke. "I promised Senor Huerra a tour of La Paloma, Captain.
He's interested in your storage methods. He wonders how forty thousand hides can
be compacted in to your hold."
Captain Thompson well understood Mister Huerra's wonder. Others had often
asked the question. He began a lengthy explanation out of respect for both
owner and guest. "Over a period of time two method have been developed, Mister Huerra.
Hides can be stowed by "shingling" or "back-to-back and flipper to flipper"
methods. There's some dispute as to whether one is superior to the other.
Personally, I like shingling."
"Hold is filled that way?"

Hi Penny,
Captain Thompson is going to tell us how forty thousand cow hides can be stored in
La Paloma's hold. He'll also tell us something about Lahaina in the Sandwich Islands. Things are changing for the better since missionaries have arrived at that whaling port. (Time frame is during the 1840's)

Regards
Ramfire
