I Am Not For You

Among many seeds scattered,
What mattered was we cared;
So, now, I am prepared
To see you flower for another;
We dared for an hour,
But now this husk
Lay in the dirt by the road,
Among dried rotted leaves,
At dusk on a dying day,
And perish; for I am not for you.
But I will cherish
And relish the time we had;
There was nothing bad
About what we had;
We cared, we shared and cried;
For a while we tried,
And sometimes overcame
Love that could not speak its name;
But I am not for you.
Every woman bleeds like us,
And needs like us
To find someone, a kind of one
To touch her heart and make herself
A part of one;
And, perhaps, a sister-friend
Will in the end be that one
Where love briefly settles upon,
And spends a butterfly-day;
But when that time is done,
She will turn again,
And return again to her ways;
A womb stays;
A child waits;
She is not a tomb,
And I am not for you.
