The engine roars, the blades go round
The chocks are away, it's off the ground
It flies through the air, with the greatest of ease
On its mission, over the seas
The pilot in the cockpit, keeping his cool
The guns on the wings, with ammo full
It's getting nearer now, the danger zone
Another mission, it will have flown
Can't relax now,full alert
All control now, must exert
Full ahead now, enemy in sight
Here we go, another dogfight
It's a Messershmitt 109
Get off its course, out of its line
Get behind, straddle its tail
It's them or us, we cannot fail
Guns start to roar, sky fills with smoke
Battle in progress, it's no joke
A stray bullet, hits the wing
It's not to bad, give them a sting
We're face to face, open fire
Direct hit, now climb higher
The enemy plane, goes down with a scream
A loud crash, they've hit the sea
Spitfire circles, mission over
Homeward bound, white cliffs of dover
The brave pilot, still keeps cool
Guns on the wings, only half full
Over the trees, airfield in sight
Bring her down, rest for the night

i absolutely adore this write. my father was part of the assembly team that produced spitfires during the war at westland helicopters in somerset. My mother used to joke if we lost the war, blame could be rested squarely on his shoulders!
Thanks for sharing this, it has bought back some wonderful memories of my parents and in particular my fathers antics.
