I'm Tired of the Lip Service

Contributed by DJ_The_Young_Grasshopper on Saturday, 8th May 2004 @ 03:23:01 AM in AEST
Topic: AngryPoetry

Civilian: Hey are you really in the Army?
Thank you for defending our country!

Soldier: Everyday I keep hearing this
Why don’t you enlist?
Pick up a rifle and follow me!
Help me defend this country!

Civilian: I can’t do that, I have a family
Besides, my mom would kill me!
I have a job-they want me to stay
I’m in college and 1 year from graduation day!

Soldier: You’ll still have your job when you get back
See the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act
Military is full of students and family men
Why don’t you become one of them?

Civilian: Now listen here soldier, you’re making me angry!
I’m too damn busy to join the military!
Right here I draw my line
You’ll never make me change my mind!

Soldier: Okay, that’s fine!
But now that I’m back on Reserve status my friends and I need employment
Our credit ratings are getting wrecked
And we no longer get unemployment checks
We’ve been looking for jobs that would pay our bills
For 6 months, we’ve found nothing still
Who would have thought when we got back to our homeland
That the cost of living would be to much to live in!?
We are war vets and we are proud!
Can you hire some of us so we have jobs?

Civilian: I can’t let you become employed!
What if you get re-deployed?
Our labor situation would be dire
Sorry, but Reservists I will not hire!

Soldier: Fine, I’ll have to go back on Active Duty!
But can you at least get rid of your SUV?
Dependency on foreign oil gives money to terrorists
So why not get a car that gets better gas mileage?
And you can believe me (because it’s true)!
That gas prices would plummet, too

Civilian: What you ask is crazy!
Asking me to give up my baby!
My car is pimped! I’m triple OG!
I refuse to give up my SUV!

Soldier: Sigh…fine whatever.
There is one more thing I must ask:
Could you please tell Bush to stop lowering taxes?
Every cut tax comes out of soldiers’ pockets
We have inadequate equipment and slashed Veterans Benefits!
Homeland Security is extremely underfunded!
Can you at least chip in to protect this nation?

Civilian: RAISE TAXES!!!! HOLY *****!!!
Are you some kind of mental case?
Don’t you know the economy is in the crapper?
And Bush says tax cuts will make it better?

Soldier: Tax cuts have killed the economy, civilian!
We have the worst job rate since the great depression!
Before the tax cuts, the economy is great!
The government didn’t have to compensate
For a trillion-dollar deficit!

Civilian: Listen here, see!
Bush said only soldiers have to sacrifice and I agree!
Stop telling me to do all of this stuff!
I said “thanks for defending me and that’s enough!
I hang an American flag in my car
And I tell you I want to win this war!
But don’t tell me to pay higher taxes,
Or get a car with better gas mileage!
I will
Not help you pay your bills!
I can’t believe this!
You actually asked me to enlist!
I tell you I'm happy for my freedom here
But the bottom line is: I JUST DON’T CARE.

I would be very angry too, some of the things you talked about are illegal, if a company disciminates against you because you are in the military you can file a law suit against it. And in answer to your question "Why don't I enlist?" I did, I served in the Navy (!990 to 1994). I help build submarines for a living. If you want to talk contact me.

I must admit, your poem intriqued me a lot.. ... Altho I am from a very small island and have only visited the US once I can understand what you are saying.. And even tho my husband has never been there, ever since 911, he always says that if he is given the chance, he'd give up everything here to go fight for that country.

Anyway, great write....Hope it makes ppl think..
Jenni

Yes, it is illegal to discriminate for being in the military. The problem is proving that they are discriminating, which they won't admit to.

Anyway, I've had conversations like these with real people-people who want the war (even in Iraq) but freak out at the thought of having higher taxes to pay for it. They don't care about the constant budget cuts being made in homeland security, and that first-responders don't have the funding they need to deal with a terrorist attack. They drive big SUVs when they don't need them so they can look nice, not caring where the oil to run their cars comes from. These people make me sick.

Even if you can't enlist, DO SOMETHING. At the very least, vote Bush out of the white house!
