Demons Rule the Night

Grief
|
The hurt courses through me,
Finds its target, my heart.
Tears it by the strings,
Tears all my hope apart.
It works swiftly, and evenly,
Methodically building walls,
There are no cracks in this armor,
There is no way to fall.
I guard my solitude,
My fortress in its own right,
With indifference and hatefulness,
Concealing all my fright.
But in the cold, lonely dark,
I quietly begin to shiver,
Then the pain begins to cut,
My lips allowed to quiver.
Then wretched, awful, howling sounds
Burst forth in an unholy way,
Unlocking all the demons
That I've held in all day.
I quake, and I shake,
And slowly count to ten,
Slowly and methodically
I lock the pain back in.
It just wouldn't be right
To let anyone see my fright,
To hear my solemn plight,
That's why all of my demons rule the night.
