58,000 MEMORIES…(©Peter Sprenkeler)
The wall it stands…in its disturbing silence,
Stark and solemn the granite gleams.
Etched thereon are all the names,
Of those now whom have no dreams.
The polished stone glistens,
Almost appearing as moistened with tears.
Etched thereon are all the names,
Of all those now whom have no fears.
The people gather…in reverent awe,
So many memories sweet and profound.
Etched thereon are all the names,
Of those now that anguish in the ground.
This monument stands as a sentinel,
Of all these young men taken by that war.
Etched thereon is their tragic tale,
Of all those that plead…Oh my God what was it for?
58,000 memories…of lives snuffed out,
The relatives still come…fingertips caressing the names.
Etched on their faces is a painful awareness,
Of all those that were victims of tragic political games.
A wall…a shrine…a testimony of both waste and valour,
In Washington…for the memories to preserve.
Etched thereon surely are so many angry spirits,
Of those whom received a fate they did not deserve.
In honour and reverent respect of the 58,000 Servicemen who died in Vietnam.
