Uneventful Nights

The unbreakable silence of the uneventful nights will not allow me to understand.
I will never know why
the cool, wet grass beneath my feet made me cry,
or why the sound of the train reminded me of him.
But now I hear nothing and I am standing on air,
so who is to say that something is real simply because you can see it,
because I see a man and he isn't there,
and he's telling me these things that are too far away to reach me.
I don't even know them when his mouth is in my ear,
because he speaks in a language unknown to the heart,
which is all that I listen with.
And one of these days,
I'll let myself go and act like some animal with no sense at all.
And I'll love every minute of my stomachaches and dizzy spells,
but for now these are uneventful days.
