After The Bell

Contributed by reprobate on Sunday, 2nd May 2004 @ 09:45:02 AM in AEST
Topic: SadPoetry

Little faces with innocent smiles gather
The latest potty joke wreaks it's benign humor
"You're it!", a solemn cherub declares
And the organized chaos ensues

Sweet and trusting are these guileless souls
Unaware of the fates in store for them
How can they know the skinned knee today
Will be the broken dreams of tommorow

As they chase with wreckless abandon
Wonder strikes deep for this observer
Who is to be the doctor, the merchant, the beggar
What will the future do to these lambs

A bell clangs and the titter dies
Summoned and gathered, led away
Laughter flags as the tasks of tommorow begin
Into their tiny hands, the seeds of the future are placed

Will you be it for all of the days before you
Could you find laughter when it really isn't funny
Would you still grow even as the child fades
So, who will you be after the last bell

This touched my heart deeply. I think we all need to look at what is important to us so that who we are after the last bell... so that that person is the person we truly want to be.
I'm at a loss for words. A truly moving piece.
Bravo!!! Encore!!!!
Love,
Chelsea

wow. this poem is so true. and it touches me deeply--the last bell has tolled for me, and i've messed things up. but my sister looks up to me and wants to be just like me. the children of today really look up to us. it is up to us to set a decent example for them.

great write!
