The Artist

Contributed by kidpoet_213 on Saturday, 1st May 2004 @ 07:25:07 PM in AEST
Topic: MiscPoems

From the moment... the artist... picks up the pencil and puts the tip to the canvas...
To lay down upon the page... the various lines and shades...
To create... the perfect portrait of a face

We enter the artist's world... a private world...
A world filled with thoughts... dreams... and memories...
A world where some things aren't always what they seem...
An arena of lines and graphite... and different shades of dark and light...
Drawn upon the canvas of life...
The markings... of different thicknesses... and varying depth...
Form the basis of this beautiful portrait...
A timeless beauty... only to be found in the eye of the beholder

The artist carefully searches the sketch...
Still not satisfied with each line that is etched...
Erasing a line here... while adding a line there...
This line is too thick... or this line is too thin...
This area is not shaded enough...
This area is shaded too much...

The artist pores over the canvas...
Much like a writer does a manuscript...
The eyes roam every square inch...
Searching the subjects face...
For that all elusive trace...
That line or shade that is out of place

Measuring the height...
Measuring the depth...
Measuring the distance...
Measuring the love that is found in the eyes... and in the smile...
And to somewhat of a degree in the heart

The artist's eyes still wonder... still roam the canvas...
Still looking for that one line... that one shade... that one little fleck of the pencil's tip...
That will put it all into focus... and bring it all together...
Then the tweeking will be over...
Or will it?

The artist is satisfed... yet not satisfed... never satisfed...
Because each sketch done... is a living... breathing entity...
A being with a life... whether it be happy or sad...
Loved or hated...
Unloved and angered...
Young or old...
The truth be told...

From the moment... the artist... picks up the pencil and puts the tip to the canvas...
To lay down upon the page... the various lines and shades...
To create... the perfect portrait of a face...
