From under a mop of defiantely straight hair
Brown eyes flash along with an infectious smile
The voice quavers with fast-approaching manhood

In a too-big Tee-shirt that drapes past hips
And month-old pants that no longer reach where they should
A mercurial "Bye, love ya" fades in a dash through the door

"Where're ya headed?", is all I can manage
As I watch after the disappearing gangliness
"To the store...back soon" is the distant over-the- shoulder reply

"Take care and stay safe" - just thoughts now
Whatever happened to my 'little helper', I wonder
Did he really have to grow up

Back now with just purchased sugary treats
My "I'm not a little kid" selflessly shares with younger brother
As the two lay sprawled in front of the T.V.

Despite "Aw, dad" protests while trashing wrappers
I manage to finagle a heart-felt hug.
I love you, son. Thank you for being you.

you have to let kids grow up... i know its hard... and i cant even talk from experience... but all i can tell you is that im 20 right now and me and my dad used to be super close and he couldnt handle me not being his little girl anymore and now we dont talk anymore he's pushed me out of his life completely... and regardless of the things I do to attempt to get him back into my life its no use...

I can only speak from the other side of this relationship, but I know I felt the same way about my father. All of a sudden there is a gap between you two and you have no idea how or when it arrived. It does get better though. I think its just a part of growing up, both as a parent and as a child.

My sentiments are the same as yours. I hated that my children had to grow up. I wish I could have stopped them at 2 & 4. All I can say is "Thank God for grandchildren!"

awww! this is so sweet! *sniff*... i miss my 'little
helpers' too, they do grow up so fast, but then
one day we are blessed with lovely independent
thinkers; beautiful people that stand on their
own, and all we can do is marvel from afar and
be thankful they are a part of us, as we now are a
part of them...

hugs n' love nessa
