The Fall of an Angel

I left you there
standing at the door
of your house in the Castro
thinking it would be
the last time I would see you alive
I remember looking back at you
and noticing how much the purple of your house
reminded me of the bruise on your thigh
Little by little
thoughts of you are dying
and I know that you have come home
to finally let go
I wouldn't let you kiss me goodbye
too angry at myself for believing you
Your lips seemed anathema then
and now are cold with your disease
How I wish we could regain
those lost and broken years
when we cut eachother with words
and I left you that first time
shouting "I will have truth in my life!"
Your favorite nurse comes in after her shift
and we sit and watch midnight TV and laugh
at the British comedy in the background.
She leaves
I crawl in bed beside you
careful of the wounds on your body
and I hold you, tears mingling with my own
"I know you're scared"
"Yes, I love you"
The steady beep of your heart monitor
reassures me that I'll see you tomorrow
and I cradle your body
Drifting in and out of sleep
I wake up often to find you breathing
my racing heart calms slightly
and I wipe the sweat from your brow
"I love you"
words are whispered
hoping they'll reach your dreams
I let sleep take me
my mind wanders to our youth
when you were my Raphael
You held such wonder then
eyes like the star for which you were named
I know you've come home to die

Aching in its description. I am truly sorry to hear about your loss.
Your words here are an instrument of pain, I can only guess at what it must be like for you.
I can't begin to thank you enough for sharing such a personal experience. You are talented in the extreme and I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Peace and Love,
Kayan

It seems so unnatural when people are taken from us. Your words drifted into my mind and I wept for them. Excellent poem. If you ever need to talk, I'm here.

I really like this poem, especially the last line, since we usually think of people leaving us when they die, but this says "you've come home". So beautiful. |
