Save Me A Seat
Trading glances across open terrain
Last week’s reasons for living
renewed within a flash
You raise your hand above your head
a question mark in your eyes
I measure the distance
between the stuff that dreams are made of
and the time that’s left to make them come true
It’s good to see you again
We’ve shared our secrets with passing strangers
to be forgotten at the crack of dawn
And I heard you beat all comers
Got yourself that fancy TV gig
You were always good at directing the obvious
But when we slipped and fell
there was no canned laughter
Just some badly rehearsed putdowns
and the crowd looking for the exit
You seem more at ease now
And it sure feels strange wanting you again
These parking lots look so dreary in the morning light
The living dead scurrying about
Hoarding souvenirs of fleeting pleasures
and always on the lookout for future treasures
We don’t belong in this place
So many lonely hearts stored in rented vaults
You wipe your brow in mock relief
at the sight of my stupid grin
Suppose you didn’t think you’d ever see me again
We were harmony on the run
Chasing phantoms straight into the night
Cast adrift on a sea of longing
and without a dime to cash it in
Beggars can’t be choosers
Couldn’t even choose what to beg for
Scraping by on whispers at dusk
The harbour lights caught in your hair
Halo of fire, angel of mercy
Shadows stretching out before us
as far as the eye could see
Kinda scary to feel I may want to need you again
Now you fumble for the car keys
Reminds me of the last time you left
after wasting so much time
playing hide-and-seek on wastelands of hope
Where your doubts had taken root
and my lies hardened into stone
Your face a cracked mirror
My reflection a mask of solitude
So I guess you could say I’m crazy
But I really wouldn’t mind a rerun
Just save me an ending
without an unexpected twist
Life’s fickle enough as it is
Save me a dream
if you’ve got one to spare
Mine have grown rough around the edges
And save me a seat
on that long ride home
We’ll take on every sharp turn in the road
as if nothing could possibly faze us
And when the light fades
and these summer days have come and gone
I’ll lay my promises at your feet
where they’d grow with the seasons
nurtured into full bloom
till fortune smiles upon us
never to forsake us again
