Early Morning Drive

Contributed by Lia on Monday, 30th September 2002 @ 07:20:00 PM in AEST
Topic: MiscPoems

A blazing sunset attempts to pierce the morning sky
........A hardened soul prepares to die
Imprisoned by a wall of thick smoky fog
........A tear soaked hankie begins to sog
Steam rolls off the hood of a fast moving car
........A drunkard, pushed past his limit, has left the bar
Headlights burn the eyes of a brave deer
........A handsome young bartender sold one too many beers
A kaliedescope of colors shimmers on the lake
........A single, simple, scared being is forced to see what's put at stake
A peaceful breeze creates waves within the wheat
........Pushing his life past the brink would only bring defeat
Mother Nature is pouring out her love with her pleasantness
........He prays to God in this moment of weakness
The buzzing electrical poles gives us a futuristic glance
........He falls to his knees knowing he's just been given his last chance

Mesmorised by the pictorial language - and enjoyed the layout stucture here Lia. Bit confused as to what this 'last chance' represents - is it a realisation of somekind? - interested to get the backstory to this (when you have time of course).

Always have time for you Terry...
The story behind this...well basically I have grown up with a whole lot of alcoholics in my life. Family and friends. And I have seen the destruction that it causes. The format of the poem is basically a story..or a timeline if you will. As the sunset is attempting to peak..a man is just now leaving the bar..and so on. The last chance shows that he survived a crash and that last ditch effort to pray to God had worked. Basically a realization for this 'person'. And in a way..this does pertain to a real event. Not exactly as the poem describes but pretty darn close....hope this helps :) muahhhhh, Lia

I know what you mean about being affected by drunkenness... It runs in my family. Every male member of my fathers side, my father included, back to as far as it can be traced. I am the first to break the chain.

I hope that this poem touches someone oneday. It's a message that certainly could be used.

This is great Lia, the wording puts the scene right there in your mind. It's not to often you see a poem about a second chance, but this was great! Great write as always Lia.
