Each night I sit by the window sill,
My gaze on the road that leads to our door
Where did you go, I wonder still,
My heart cries out to that distant shore.
That distant shore with that stretch of beach,
that forever holds you out of reach
You left to conquer that foreign land,
But gave your life to the shifting sand.
The shifting sand and the cresting waves,
For so many became their distant graves
Their bodies lost to the Turkish gun,
Left to spoil in the midday sun.
Lying dead in the midday heat,
From fighting an enemy defending their land
Hearts and minds need learn retreat
Is noble 'gainst the possessing hand.
Is noble if the outcome be,
That my love, my life returns to me
To walk that road that leads to our door
To be together for ever more.
Instead I place against the sill
Knowing that you can't repair
A candle's flame to guide you still,
On whatever path you walk out there.
