A Wish that is a Plea

Contributed by spike on Monday, 19th April 2004 @ 02:43:52 AM in AEST
Topic: LovePoetry

I wish I knew what was in your heart,
A window through which I could gaze
Upon that undiscovered country where
I hope I play some role, some part.

Perhaps then I could find answers
To my own feelings
Futile imaginings or rewarded yearning,
So that I too, can understand.

I know what is in your head,
Every age treads well-worn paths
I have shared your tangled thoughts,
Strange brews of ego and self-recrimination,
Euphoria and despair
But I cannot see into your heart.

Perhaps then, I could
Speak the right words to soothe your pain,
Know the right touch to close your wounds,
The right look to give you hope,
And allow the right silence to give you peace.

But instead, I tread awkwardly as before,
Uncertain if your dark and troubled sea
Will envelop me,
Or cast me back to the bleached and familiar shore.
