Harbor people, empty palms thrust forward,
eyes wide in askance.
They live here on these planks in summer
Street vendors calling.
Flying banner ads.
Music pounding from restaurants,
a million types of Jazz
along the pier -- all pleading for attention.
But tourists move with the pigeons
running in little tight packs.
A quilt of living colors not pausing
but pecking at popcorn and peanuts.
They rush to the water's edge and stand
and stare and murmur.
Hypnotized.
Blood moves slowly.
Worries scatter.
Liquid sun trembles on the surface
where rock bass dart beneath.
Sailboats glide above.
Mythical water. Magical brew.
The seawind captures them,
re-inflates near-dead spirits
The gray wind lifts with their faces
and strangers say hello.
Smiling, they have seen enough
They peer into their wallets
and swiftly turn back toward the city.
