I must get through the lines;
I must go on, and survive.
More depends on this than my own life;
on this depends my buddies, my country, and my wife.
I can't lose this fight; I must continue on.
I’m now on the battlefield, on the front lines.
Everything here is scorched and destroyed -
the ground, the bodies, the pines.
Rockets screech above, ahead I see them fall
in the dusk, ghastly explosions light surrounding debris,
and rip through my enemies’ battle-call.
I must carry out my orders,
no matter what lies between;
enemies come – I fight through them.
It’s against them I’m forced to defend.
They cannot scathe me; I must continue on.
One gets too close for comfort,
I can see his face; he’s scared, and has acne,
brown hair and blue eyes;
he reminds me of my younger brother.
I pull out my knife,
it’s shiny and brand-new;
I haven’t used it since it was issued,
but I use it now.
Blood spills on the dirt,
along with the rest.
I must let nothing phase me,
though I see friends fall.
Stevens cut down by shrapnel,
Johnson’s arm is no more,
I do what I can to get help to them; I must continue on.
Bright red above, in front, below.
The skies of dusk, explosions, and blood flows to the stream.
The enemy’s loss of resolve becomes tangible,
as they slow their charge.
My own relief and my men’s
helps me fight the few steps more.
I’ve done what I must, at least for now;
we’ve reached our objective, but not our goal;
after some rest, and then the dawn,
tomorrow will bring more war…
I am a soldier; I must continue on.
