*Just Listen To Me*

When I ask you to listen to me
and you start giving me advice,
you have not done what I asked.
When I ask you to listen to me
and you begin to tell me why
I shouldn't feel that way,
you are trampling on my feelings.
When I ask you to listen to me
and you feel that you have to do something
to solve my problem.
You have failed me,
strange as that may seem.
Listen! All I ask is that you listen.
Don't talk or do--just hear me.
Advice is cheap; 20 cents,
will get you little.
And I can do for myself;
I am not helpless.
Maybe discouraged and faltering,
but I sure ain't helpless.
When you do something for me that I can
and need to do for myself,
you contribute to my pain and fears.
But when you accept it as a simple fact
that I feel what I feel,
no matter how irrational,
and I behave the way I behave,
no matter how silly,
and do what I do,
no matter how bad it is.
Then I can stop trying to convince
you and get on about this buisness
of understanding what's behind
these irrational feelings, behavior, and actions.
And when that's clear, the answers are
obvious and I don't heed the advice.
Irrational feelings, behavior, and actions make sense when
we understand what's behind them.
Perhaps that's why prayer works, sometimes,
for some people--because God is mute
and he doesn't give advice or try
to fix things.
God just listens and let's us work
it out for ourselves.
So please listen and just hear me.
And if you want to talk, wait a minute
for your turn,
and then I will listen to you.
I admit that I do need help,
but do not worry because I know.
And I am gettting it.
I realized my ways were wrong,
and that I couldn't live
my life this way.
It's just not healthy,
and I have so much to look
forward to in my life.
So I am turnning my life around.
I'm not doing this for anyone or anything
except myself.
And I know I cannot stand alone.
So if you'd please,
please help me through this.
Stand with me.
