Daddy dearest, here’s your part
Family life is messy art
All of us must play a role
But why was ours the Grand Guignol?
Monstrous heart, where’s the gain
In bringing your poor wife such pain?
Knocking mother to the floor,
Sobs behind the bedroom door.
Daddy dearest loves the drink
Throwing up in the kitchen sink,
Pi**ing on the patio,
You always put on quite a show.
Daddy dearest where’s the love
Somewhere between the push and shove?
Somewhere in your callused hand,
Descending again to leave its brand?
Children dreading your arrival home
Mom’s on your side, them alone
Beating us with buckled belts,
Splotchy bruises, stinging welts.
Daddy dearest where’s the care
In stripping your poor children bare?
Forcing on them lustful acts,
telling us to just relax.
Walking on eggshells ever day,
Fear that never goes away
Which audience were we to tell
That life at home was living hell?
Your narcissistic macho pride
hating all that is inside,
Finally drove us out the door
Our only blessing, no encore.
Daddy dearest, you nailed your part
Made child abuse a work of art,
We played the victims on your stage
Held captive by our fear and age.
Now living lives beyond your will,
The roles we played are with us still
But so are new ones, strong and pure,
Characters that will endure.
Lovers, workers, husbands, wives
Parents nurturing tender lives
Children whose family role,
Need never suffer the Grand Guignol.
