16 Candles

Contributed by Alli on Monday, 12th April 2004 @ 10:00:06 AM in AEST
Topic: Grief

The day was approaching, she could hardly wait
One more candle to add to the cake
All of her friends would surely be there
And they would have fun, with laughter to share
Now finally it came, the day of her birth
16 years, take them for what they're worth
It was a wonderful party, with wonderful guests
With one boy being more important than the rest
He was her secret crush for more than five years
When they were together she forgot all her fears
After the party they went for a ride
In his brand new sports car, with her by his side
What a great way to celebrate her 16 years
And it didn't even matter that he'd had a few beers
The car went so fast, with the wind in her face
And then there was a crash, oh what a disgrace
With the screeching tires and shattering glass
He looked around for her as he lay in the grass
The tears fell down like he was in a flood
When he saw her in the car, all covered in blood
He tried to get up, he wanted to hold her
I bet now he wished he'd been driving sober
She never made it home, too much damage to her brain
Now all that's left are memories
And 16 candles down the drain.
2001

Very tragic story, one that you have managed to capture the essense and tragedy of in this well-written poem. Kudos.
