Who's Deaf?

Contributed by thespiritx on Monday, 12th April 2004 @ 02:08:01 AM in AEST
Topic: selfstruggles

Tap.
Tap... tap.
Click, tap, click, tap.

I'm walking...
Through life, maybe...
Or not.

I guess I am walking...
Through a hallway.
I guess.

I'm just walking.

I am lost,
Even though
I am found.

The rooms are quiet,
Even though
There is sound.

A din of taciturnity.

Tap.
Tap... tap.
Click, tap, click, tap.

I step forward.
More ground covered,
Less ground left to cover.

The silence screams
Directly at me,
Shouting profanities.

Profanities I don't hear.

And, from the void,
A flood, a torrent
Of people.

Surrounding me,
They rush in,
Only to stand and talk

As if they are at a party.

Tap.
Shuffle... tap.
Scrape, tap, scrape, tap.

I dodge the questions
And the comments.
I dodge the people,

Sidestepping
Like a dancer,
Graceful in his element.

Skirting among them all.

I push and struggle
To make my way
Through the crowd.

I just want out
on the other side
Where there is peace... and quiet?

But it is already quiet.

Tap.
Stomp... tap.
Thump, tap, thump, tap.

So close
To the end,
But still more to go.

I should just pretend
That they aren't talking,
Since I can't understand.

Pretend nothing is happening.

And they'll look at me,
With no interest in their eyes,
And ask if I know what they mean,

Or if I had any comment
On the subject at hand,
Which I don't,

Because I didn't hear the topic.

Thump.
Stomp... thunk.
Thump, stomp, thunk, clomp.

SLAM.

I've made it
To my own little
Corner of the world.

Alone, I can rest,
And talk to myself,
Because I understand me.

I understand my own thoughts.

They pound on the door,
Trying to break through
My barrier of incomprehension.

And I feel fear.
The fear of asking what was said
More than one time,

And of being told that it's not important.

Silence.

"Is it not important?"
I wonder. They wanted
To tell me in the first place.

Is everyday life, then,
Not really all that
Significant, in the end?

No, no... I think it is.

Please, please
Tell me again what
You said.

Do you understand, man,
That I can't hear you?
Don't you hear me asking, "what?"

Perhaps you're the one who's deaf.

This is such an awesome write, I loved every bit of it from start to finish. I'd rather live in my own little world than listen to other people's garble that I can't understand anyway. Well done, you've crafted a very captivating poem.

This is a great piece, it makes you wonder a lot about people who are deaf, and people who are not, but sometimes they might as well be if they can't here the deaf neither.

beautiful expression of feelings, great message, makes all who reads it contemplate the world of the deaf, if they have not yet, a world of silence but is it worse than those who talk to hear themselves talk, making noise into the wind, again, this is beautiful and brilliantly stunning:) hugs n' love nessa
