Now lady fair watched Segundo walk beams
and she felt shudder go up spine with sight.
This Segundo, with balance fine it seems,
walked rails as he walked colonnade just right.
Bald male, now making conversation light,
asked Jose simple question speaking low.
"This new captain you mentioned, Don Hernandez, this
Frank Thompson, will he also be guest at dinner tonight?"
"Si, Senor Huerra. We're even now on way to visit La Paloma
and bring him home. He sails for Boston in the next couple of
days and this gives excellent opportunity of wishing him well.
Have you ever been on board my ship, Senor?"
"I've never had that pleasure, Excellency. I'm afraid my
experience has been solely with agents and manifests."
"You must make a tour this afternoon. I think you'll enjoy seeing
how safely and securely merchandise is stored."
"Your offer is much appreciated. It would be my pleasure to observe
such interesting procedure. Segundo directs cattle slaughter and
drying of Plata hides, but it's time I see for myself what care's
taken for their passage around Cape Horn. Your method must be
very effective, Excellency; I've never been disappointed in the
return on my investments."
