What Would You Do?

If you caught a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day,
would you keep it for yourself, or give some of it away?
If you saw a lonely tear falling from someone's eye,
would you walk away, or take the time to find out why?
If you saw a child had fallen, and scraped their little knee,
would you take the time to soothe it, by saying..."let me look and see?"
If you saw a hungry man, begging on the street,
would you stop and offer something, so this man could eat?
If you had the chance to be a Queen, and sit high upon a throne,
would you give it up, or keep your humble home?
Would you love your neighbor, if at times they were unkind,
or pretend you didn't know them...as if you to were blind?
Myself, I think I know the answers if all these things did arise,
I would be the person that I am, not someone in disquise.
For I need to be to others giving freely my very best,
if at night when I go to bed, I could get a healthful rest.
I would take the sunshine and let all share in it's light,
wipe the tear from someone, who is lonely in the night.
I would calm the child who in a moment experienced pain,
feed the hungry beggar, I'd have a lot to gain.
There is no need to be a Queen, sitting high on a golden throne,
simple things would give me pleasure in my humble home.
I would try to love my neighbor, friendship is a precious thing,
it would bring with it love...teach my soul to sing.

Ah. Like many, I want to do all of those things. But I'm not immune from the irrational sort of fear we have in doing something kind. Perhaps just a deep feeling of humility, of seeing ourselves as no better, in fact less, than the one we are trying to help. We don't know how to deal with the feeling, and thus we avoid it, like one avoids a plunge into cold, clean water.
Excellent piece. Keep it up!
