Farm Wife.

She sees the silvery stars recede
Before the questing streaks of dawn
Herald a new day.
The fiery sun glares down on the dust
Of red roads, ribboned about the hills.
Hills laced with trees long dead,
Silent and grey.
She sees the fingers of drought grip
Mercilessly, the countryside,
And feels the searing whip of heated winds.
The bushfire's flaming scourge
Among the living trees.
Hers, the strong will to survive.
To live, and in living, pass on life.
She hears the kiss
Of rain on sunbaked, thirsty earth.
And then know the bliss of running waters.
Sometimes she seeks the the fount of truth,
Buried in years, the many years
That brought her faith to harsh maturity.
And in the ever quickening pace of
Passing time.
Beats out the tempo of her daily life.
She knows so well,
Her ever present work routine;
Yet, the joy is hers of living things.
Lambs in season, fledgelings testing wings.
The call of wild birds soaring.
So envious of the eagle's flight.
Yet would not change to fly with them
In height. Even in thought.
This is her fate, a spirit that responds
To the eagle's eyrie ascent,
And turns again to kiss her chosen bonds.

This poem took me straight back to my home town. red soil, dry air, those beautiful constellations at night, the stillness...Strong recollective imagery, transposed with a soft write. Lovely mix - now I'm all nostalgic! |
