Reflections On The Wall

Contributed by Justalady on Thursday, 8th April 2004 @ 09:37:26 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

A tiny piece of glass upon my wall for many years has hung,
reflecting back at me...the image of what I have become.
Many years have shown the traces of life, much of it well hid,
even an occasional tear, beneath a painted eyelid.

Never was perfection that I sought, only youthful beauty to be seen,
when ever I stopped and glanced and saw a certain gleam.
There was no need to linger and study...although at times I did,
only to see what others saw, and perhaps the slight imperfections hid.

Why is it this piece of glass has stayed the same hanging on my wall,
although as I peer within, I'm not sure it's me at all?
Lines have appeared upon my delicate skin and my hair is turning gray,
my mouth show's only the slight sensuous curve that was there yesterday.

Should I take away this mirror that seems to want to show so much,
as I lift my fingers to touch pale skin that has grown rough to the touch?
Would it make a difference, if I was really unable to see,
what my outer appearance is trying to tell me?

I truly doubt that the reflection staring back at me, from the mirror on the wall,
is what I'm really all about. as my mind and heart begins to call,
for me to turn my head and forget the image I see there.
It's not my outer self that I have left to share.

As I look closer, these are laugh lines...there's yet a twinkle in my eyes,
full mature lips, that in their day caused a few lives to sigh.
Still, it's a reflection of me, as I have indeed grown a little old,
but not afraid to see and to apprieciate the silver in my hair...instead of shiny gold.

Great poem on self inspection. The descriptions played out so well.
