Time Goes By

TIME GOES BY

I’M SITTING HERE ON THIS OLD ROCKING CHAIR,
THINKING ABOUT THE YEARS THAT GOT ME HERE.
MANY OF HAPPINESS AND MANY OF JOY,
AS THESE YEARS PRODUCED THREE GIRLS AND A BOY.
BUT THERE WERE DAYS OF HEARTACHE AND PAIN,
AS WE DELT WITH LIFE HOWEVER IT CAME.
I REMEMBER ENDLESS HOURS WORKING THE FIELD,
ALWAYS PREPAIRING FOR THE NEXT DAYS MEAL.
STARTING THE DAY BEFORE THE SUN,
THAT’S THE WAY MOST DAYS WOULD RUN.
STAGGER IN SOMETIME AFTER NINE,
MOST DAYS WERE A STRUGGLE BACK IN THOSE TIMES.
ONLY ON SUNDAYS, WAS THESE TIME FOR REST,
TO SPEND TIME WITH MY FAMILY, I TRIED MY BEST.
BUT THE HARD WORK TOOK ITS TOLL, ON THIS FAMILY OF MINE,
AND MY HUSBAND PASSED ON, LONG BEFORE HIS TIME.
LEFT ME WITH BILLS I COULDN’T PAY,
AND LAND THAT NEEDED ATTENTION TWENTY-FOUR HOURS A DAY.
WE STRUGGLED TO KEEP WHAT WE HELD SO DEAR,
BUT MOST DAYS IT WAS MORE THAN WHAT WE COULD BEAR.
DETERMINED NOT TO GIVE IN OR FACE DEFEAT,
NO MATTER HOW SORE IT MADE MY HANDS AND FEET.
I KEPT THAT LAND GOING FOR ALMOST TEN YEARS,
AND WHEN I COULDN’T GO NO LONGER BROUGHT ME TO TEARS.
I HAD TO SELL OFF MOST OF WHAT WE OWNED,
BUT WHAT I WOULDN’T GIVE UP WAS THIS FAMILY HOME.
I WATCHED GRANDCHILDREN GROW UP HERE ON THIS SITE,
AND OUR FAMILY REMAINED SO VERY TIGHT.
BUT PEOPLE MOVE ON LIKE THEY ALWAYS DO,
AND I SEE THEM MOST TIMES WHEN THEY’RE PASSING THROUGH.
SO MOST MORNING I COME OUT AND SIT IN THIS CHAIR,
AND THINK ABOUT THE YEARS THAT GOT ME HERE.
SUCH WONDERFUL MEMORIES, BUT THOSES DAYS ARE GONE,
IT’S JUST THIS OLD CHAIR AND I, AND THIS USED UP FARM.
