all I can do is blink
and remember the 'long long ago's
I remember everything
I remember those popsicles
you liked so much
and how on hot summer days,
we'd eat and we'd laugh
and the popsicles would always melt
in a syrupy purple-red drip
and the world was a blur
of juicy sticky gritty icy hot friendship
I remember that dog
we'd walk together
I thought he liked me better
you were positive he preferred you
and we taught him tricks
for no reason other than
a reason for us to be proud
and his tongue was scratchy
in a nice sort of way
I remember those lemonade stands
that we always did in winter
just to annoy our parents
"why in the world,"
they'd ask, exasperated,
"would you sell lemonade in winter?"
and we'd smile at each other
and drink the lemonade
--well, you drank mine,
as I thought it tasted bad--
and we were glad and life was good
I remember that tree
that neither of us could climb
each of us would brag that we could
and it always ended in a stalemate:
"I'll climb it, if you go first"
"same, if YOU go first"
and we'd dare each other to go
and each would hug the rough bark
before saying casually,
"nah, I don't feel like it today."
I remember the contests we used to have
command our parents to be judges
and ask them who did it
--did what, you ask? did anything--
better than the other
and we'd whine when they refused to choose
and yet loved them for it
and appointed ourselves as judge
and each say the other was better.
I remember the foods we tried to bake
and how, after the first ten burnt brownies,
we got used to taking them out
five minutes before they were done
to taste the sweet sugary dough
always undercooked, but we didn't care
and we'd laugh, in little-kid giggles
when we offered them to friends
who turned them down with distaste.
I remember
I remember
I remember
I try to forget
the more recent memories
how you, always in love with Life,
fell for Life and kept on falling
then pricked your finger
on the spindle of Reality
and fell into eternal dreamland--
a hundred years have come and gone,
your prince too busy to show
so when you see the tears in my eyes
--what? I'm not crying
I don't cry
least of all for tragedies so long ago
but let's just pretend I am--
it's not for you, it's not for now,
it's for what I remember
of the 'long long ago's . . .

Usually, when I say a poem made me cry, I mean dry tears - because I don't cry either. But this made me cry. I'd say I didn't know why, but I do; and it's because I know this story well.
Me? I'm glad you didn't go back over it. Had you altered it, some of the amazingly raw emotion might have been taken away.
This is incredible, and I can't say less.
Keep writing,
-Eve. |

You're gonna make me cry.... geez... as if I'm not nostalgic enough without your help! *reminisces sadly* Memories suck... I think I'm going to go have my memory removed. *looks around for somewhere to get her memory removed* Uhh... yeah... I think it's this way... see ya later......
(Oh yeah, great poem. lol. Even though it made me all melancholy and stuff.)

What a sweet/bitter poem *sniff sniff* You really made me cry on this one! Memories aren't always welcome and in this poem you wrote how much unwelcome they can be! Awesome write!

I'm amazed that this poem was able to stir me so deeply and almost reduce me to tears. You've crafted a beautiful poem of lost memories. Thanks for posting this up. |

Sometimes when I read poetry it is a catalyst for memories shrouded in the past. This is how I felt when reading your poem. Those memories came flooding back with a mixture of nostalgia and sad reflection.
The title was excellent and the poem originally unique and fabulous to read.

Memories grow more blurry, or sharper, the more they affect us as we go on. Nostalgia plays a significant role in my perception of reality, and you bridged your past and my present with excellence in this write.

I didn't cry, but I did remember. You took me back to being a child again and a very best friend to someone. I wonder where she is now and if she ever remembers me and all the fun we had. I doubt it, but I'm glad I remembered. Thank you. This is certainly special.

Thanks for the poem, my heart ached because I miss all those memories. I convinced myself that I didnt care about the past and the friends and adventures we used to have. But apparently I do. Moving to a new state, I thought I left it all behind, but its always been in my mind. ( Did I just rhyme, :)) Lovely poem crafted with so much emotion. Everyone can relate to it and I'm so glad you posted it. |
