Alcoholic Tears

Contributed by Sweet-Poison on Monday, 5th April 2004 @ 06:55:19 AM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

Why are you crying,
Old man?
Another drink in your hand,
Are you not ashamed,
Old man?

You have everything,
Loving wife,
Intelligent daughter,
She will make you proud,
You know that,
Old man.

You’re still working,
Finished decorating your house now,
You should be proud,
Why are you drinking again,
Old man?

Don’t drown your sorrows,
You shouldn’t have any regrets,
Empty bottles litter your table,
Old man,
Don’t you see?
That this is killing you?

Your wife cries herself to sleep,
Why don’t you go home,
And comfort her,
Old man?
Don’t leave it to your daughter,
She’s busy studying.

You’re going to lose,
Old man,
There's nothing for you to gain,
Not at the bottom of the next bottle,
No, Old man,
You’re failing.

Your wife,
She longs to help you,
Don’t you see?
You do need help,
Old man,
But she’s so frustrated,
You’re losing her too.

And your daughter,
She’s falling behind,
She wants to make you proud,
But you’re not there to see it,
So she is giving up,
She’s failing,
Because of you,
Old man.

Can’t you see?
You’re losing everything,
Old man,
Aren't you happy with all you have?
Soon you will have even less,
Old man,
Then what will you do?
Will you still cry,
Into the same bottles that got you here?

A very powerful poem showing the true effects alchohol can have on someone, very well written and thought provoking. Well done.

I was much impressed with this poem. Alcohol is to some people a way out of the daily life that we all must lead. You have presented a good picture of the grief and tragedy that lies behind drink. Thanks for an interesting read bernard.
