Treacherous tears

Contributed by Necromant on Friday, 2nd April 2004 @ 12:30:39 PM in AEST
Topic: EmotionalPoetry

As I was smiling today tears started sliding down my face,
I couldn’t stop them, they fell mutinously, leaving a wet trace

My friends were all shocked, they never thought I could cry,
Should have expected such a reaction, all I ever showed them was a lie

But how can I explain to them that that’s the true me?
I’m the ‘cold hearted’ one that laughs at a brutal horror scene

I’m the fool of the act, always cynical, showing the exuberant leader,
Always the one in control of the situation, on top of the ladder

I’m ashamed to admit that I fear the dark, cry, hope, and dream too,
Even more ashamed to say that what you’re reading is true…

In the end I just told them I got something irritating in my eyes,
And continued smiling, grinning, laughing... at myself…at my lies

i know EXACTLY what you mean. putting on that facade of being the tough one...the life of the party. everyone needs to grieve though. but lying...that's gotten me in some trouble before. just be true to yourself and KEEP WRITING!

I have been guilty of the same thing. Don't berate yourself to much, we are all human. I really enjoyed this poem and the point you made. Kie

I really think people should show true feeling like what you showed. You shouldn't it in. I learned that from my g/f. If you showed more feelings you'd feel different but in a good way. It would relieve some stress, that I also learned. But the poem is really good. Keep it up. -Steve-

The message behind your great poem Anne
is one for all of us to ponder over.
I do the same thing.........and then I wonder?
I think it's because I feel it embarrasses my friend when I cry.
So most of the time I don't shed tears, just sigh!
Tis a great poem here Anne...I just loved ikt

great write...reality isn't always pretty but it's still reality...i am not an advocate for brutal honesty but when we write from the heart (putting our egos aside) the words flow out just as they should...your honesty shines through from a heart that isn't quite as cold as you may think...sometime we are so hard on ourselves it is unreal...impressive piece.

I can relate to this so well. There's always the fear of exposing weakness. Beautiful poem, you have expressed emotions so well.

Tears are not to be trusted, they say they will stay hidden but never do. Betrayers of a smile they are...

This was filled with such honesty,
Very, very well done my friend

This is so personal and telling. I have a friend like this. I really, really hurt this person (not intentionally), and I was never told until much, much later. I was so upset that I hadn't been told. It's so much better to be real.

Wow, Anne, this is fantastic . . . and rang so true. I know the feeling so well and you described it perfectly. Especially the

My friends were all shocked, they never thought I could cry,
Should have expected such a reaction, all I ever showed them was a lie

part. And the last two lines were solid gold. Beautiful, beautiful, job.

Why did you cry? And why did you not want to cry??..............hmmm Anne know what, when I was younger, I never allowed myself to cry, because I believed in a real man (though I wasn't even a man then!^-^) should shed blood but not tears...... but the sad thing is, now even when I want to cry to release my sorrow/stress/anger, I could NOT cry any more!! You may never experience it, but I can tell it, it feels aweful when you can not let it out when you really need to! To me, even crying is a luxury!....... So you know, do not surpress your feelings, there is nothing to be ashame of crying or showing your weakness, be the real you, and be proud of what you are, that is what most important...... okay I think I better quit winging now!^-^
