Paint a foots-worth of toenails,
Then rise to glance at my reflection
And straighten a stray hair,
Alight on the desk chair to pen
an essay, but address a letter instead,
Back on my feet I fold a shirt on
the way to the closet- stop to see if
My cell phone holds any messages,
Paint the remaining toes:
Then UP! to change the radio
station: where's the remote?
Search the floor, find a book,
Read a paragraph, look around,
Return a misplaced keychain,
Look through purse- no gum,
Smudge a toenail on carpet,
Flop on bed to read book- same paragraph,
Go to desk to jot a quote,
Pass by mirror and shake head,
Back to nail polish to fix toe.
This subtle pacing, barely perceptible,
Is also unexplicable, but it
helps to temper the restless
back- and- forth swinging
pacings in my head.
