Where were the sages who lived
For truth in the hermitages?
Where were the righteous people
who lived for the sacred word?
When this wind was filled with
Fragrant smoke of holy fires,
When this land bloomed with
Sweet scented heavenly flowers,
Angeles visited the homes of men
Partook food and guided them to bliss,
When righteousness ruled over the men,
These lands were indeed gardens
Of heaven and centers of learning;
Then these forests were the dwelling
Places of fairies, nymphs, elves and angels;
When wickedness ruled over the minds of men
Cities turned into civilized jungles
And these lands into wilderness
Filled with heaps of skulls and bones
And heaps of ashes and thorny bushes
Lived by the packs of wolves and evil spirits
Each night is a nightmare to the dreamers
Who lost their path into this land of wolves
As air is filled with piteous cries and moans
Of departed souls and massacred men
Women and children; here are the cries
Of tortured souls and they fly in the nightly air
Angry ghosts speed past with burning ire
Hungry demons feast on the corpses of men,
If somebody try to change this hell into heaven
Packs of wolves would tear them into pieces
And feast on their flesh leaving traces of bones!

| You give my mind so many thoughts to ponder. To say I loved this poem would be a huge understatement. I adored it and I believe it is now my new favorite by you. | Powerful write but terrible vision...a hellish vision if there ever was one. But I guess that you are right herein the wolves are indeed upon men. I used to remember a time of balance when the world has a variety of predators thus keeping balance now we have only one monster the wolves that does as they pleases. Person, whole communities and even nations tremble for national borders are not a haven, the armies of the wolves goes where it pleases. I enjoyed reading this as it concludes with my sad vision o fthe world. |

I was goint to say this is my favorite so far of your stories venkat but Larry beat me to the punch :) It is short sharp and to the point all the chevrons of a good work. The images are surreal and vivid I like that in a poem. This is what a sage can accomplish...

Venkat, I would like to commend you for writing the following lines;
"When righteousness ruled over the men,
These lands were indeed gardens
Of heaven and centers of learning;"
Those words peeled back the aeons to a wistful time we all harken for nowadays, but which is sadly forgotten. They also led into the darkness which inhabited the remainder of this, a very fine work indeed.

Very intense read. From the simpler times to present (at least that's how I decipher it).Started out so magical and ended up so NOW. As usual you astound me with your way of weaving a tale. Great wordsmith!!

| For some reason the wolves bit reminded me of the Louvre in France cause I think wolves used to roam wild there way back when *is confused* Forget it. About the poem, the imagery hit home first, it was very intense and clear, as was everything else about the poem. Great write ;) |
