She looks in the mirror, and what does she see?
A tattered old dress, hanging far below her knees,
hand-me-down shoes, with soles that are thin,
they match the loneliness buried within.
The crack in the mirror makes it hard to detect
the image of pain and years of neglect,
or the faces of five children, objects of scorn
that followed them since the day they were born.
But being the eldest, thirteen were her years,
she cared for her siblings, helped dry their tears.
She searched in the cupboards to find a few crumbs,
would beg from the neighbors, please..I need to feed someone.
They worked in the fields, from morning till night,
handed over their pennies, that was their plight.
Although they were young, their backs filled with pain,
when morning came, there was more of the same.
Their simple goal was to please the only parents they had,
they didn't realize that they had it so bad.
Being young, they did as were told,
never knew different, till they grew old.
