For Nicholas

Grief

The tiniest light, you held
the flame of life in your newborn hands
A moment, an hour, a day...
A cool dark wind blew it out;
You were no more.
Never to know the agonies
and joys of love.
But love you had before you came to be.
I weep in silence
for I will never know you
and you will never know you touched my heart.
Tomorrow and the next day and the next
I will think of you....
I am grateful now for the days of my life
But if I could
I would have gladly given some to you,
the tiniest light.
