Now Margarita speaks of snakes we're told,
relating tale of awesome courage seen.
Of fleet bird killing snakes with beak most bold.
This he does quickly, he is very mean.
Diego Silva's wit made all laugh. Huerra recovered first. "Birds kill snakes too, senora."
Dona Rose spoke. "I've seen such a thing with roadrunners, Don Huerra."
"Mama," Margarita said entering the conversation again. "Grabano Indians have a
legend about roadrunners. Do you know it?" " No dear, I don't. Why don't you tell us."
Margarita put an exquisitely shaped finger to her lips in thought; nail was beautifully
manicured. She began. "Once, long ago, a messenger appeared at ‘Jantabo', village
of the Grabano Indians. He told of Apaches, ancient enemies, securing the great mystery
of fire from a burning mountain far beyond their land. Messenger said Apaches would neither
give nor sell their secret to the Grabanos. Grabano tribal council convened and all the
beasts and birds attended. The chief asked for someone brave enough to go to the burning
mountain. Each member of the tribe and each bird and beast had some excuse to make, until
the chief was almost in despair. Then, into the circle walked a lean brown bird, the
roadrunner. He volunteered to go. Setting out at once, he ran swiftly across the desert until he reached the Colorado River. Here he stopped in bewilderment, for he couldn't swim and the river was too wide to fly across.Trying in vain to solve his problem, he noticed a rattlesnake about to eat a nest of goose eggs. Without hesitation, he killed the snake. The goose in
gratitude, carried the roadrunner across the river.
