I used to be popular
No, wait, that's a lie
I just once dated
A popular guy
I must've been his last choice
But I believed he really meant it
In his doings I had no voice
And all my trust, he spent it
I used to be popular
No, wait, that's a lie
I just once dated
A popular guy
Did I like the attention
I never thought of it that way
But that's what he mentioned
When he took his love away
I used to be popular
No, wait, that's a lie
I just once dated
A popular guy
So I'm just a regular girl
I'm like all the rest
For selfish reasons I intruded his world
And took all the best
I used to be popular
No, wait, that's a lie
I just once dated
A popular guy
I try not to be sarcastic
Honestly, what did I expect?
The changes were drastic
Seems there's nothing I should regret
I used to be popular
No, wait, that's a lie
I just once dated
A popular guy
Now, did I really think, he said
He'll be with me forever
I shouldn't be mad
We're just too different to be together
I used to be popular
Maybe it's a lie
All I know is
My ex was a popular guy

I despise people like this. They think they are doing you a favor by being seen with you. Where do they get off?? People like that should choke on their own arrogance.

excellent write. you got me everytime with that: "I used to be popular, no wait that is a lie...."You took this one right on down wordcraft Blvd. melancholy, self deprecating, painfully honest as how you percieved it to be.
I've learned over time though that people who have a sort of charismatic popularity many times leave while the illusion is still strong that this has some intrinsic worth. Oft times prefering to give up what they shouldn't. out of fear that soon people will discover maybe not much is propping this up.
How gratifying it must be to see such admiration/adulation, in someones eyes.
Maybe best to move on before he sees that fade from view? I know, still hurts whatever the reason.
Like Joni Mitchell said a long time ago, on the
subject of "beautiful" people:"laughing it all the way."
I've been going to peoples parties,
they have a lot of style.
They have stamps of many countries,
they have passport smiles.
Some are witty, some are cutting,
some are watching things from the wings.
Some are standing in the middle
giving to get some thing.
Cry for us all beauty.
For life makes us crazy.
Cry for Karen in the corner thinking she's nobody And Jack behind his joker,
Stone cold grace behind her fan.
I've been going to people's parties trying to understand.
Joni, takes from this, a belief that: "Laughing and crying,
you know they're the same release."
Then in the saddest damn voice I have ever heard in a song, she says:
"Now i'm laughing it all the way."
Just entertain the thought that it was time for love's illusion to move on.
Anyway, real good write. R&R
