Solitary Ride
It is quiet and dark in the house,
The dogs are sound asleep.
Old Baxter, the flame point cat, opens an eye,
but yawns and returns to his dreams.
As quietly as possible, I make all ready,
Pump up the tires, check the chain,
Pull on my gloves,
And out the front door I go.
I start my ride in total darkness,
as if to accentuate my normal solitude.
Others won't ride with me...their loss?
Or Mine? Time will tell.
The beginning of my ride my mind wanders:
The lady I sleep with, the lady who inspires me,
My condition in life,
Where I am and where I would like to be.
Antique legs feebly pumping on pedals
Attached to a vintage bike.
Columbus tubing, some screws and a chain,
a tire pump and an old leather saddle.
I can now just start to make out shapes,
and I can see my legs pumping up and down.
My breathing is comfortable and relaxed,
This is just a nice ride.
I wonder about the faceless individual,
who worked in Waterford Wisconsin years ago,
Did he have any idea what he was building
When he brazed this frame together?
Laminated steel tubing, cut to custom length,
Carefully assembled into a frame that is true,
Was this just a job for him?
Or, do you think he Knew?
Now as I pedal along, I am nearing the Zone.
Don't ask, I can't explain, but you must believe,
It is there.
Good to be back in the Zone!
I am now riding to the east, and old Sol is rising.
Thru pink and orange clouds the light radiates,
Sending shafts of pure light into the sky,
In the Zone, it is just me, the bike, and the sun!
I relish in the view that I see,
and maybe it inspires me to work a little harder.
But soon, the sun rises, and takes on it's normal appearance
I guess I must afterall share it with others for a time.
The faint sound of the skinny tires on the pavement,
The hum of the well oiled bearings running in thier races,
The chain as it almost noislessly moves from one gear to the next,
These are the sounds of solitude in the Zone.
I have now arrived at my destination, but I am not ready to quit.
I take a few seconds to detour
And ride by my Lady L's house, not to see her,
But just to let her spirit happily invade my solitude.
Now, I'm at work, doing my job as best I can
(I don't know any other way)
But with brief exceptions, I am already thinking
about my next solitary ride.
