I saw the world as one pretty place;
Pretty faces, pretty smiles and pretty clothes
Where glamour queen basked in shining light,
With neon shows, huge broadways and cool posh cars,
Zooming here and there, like a display
In unashamed splendor and godlike grace.
My eyes, they could only gaped in awe,
At those streets with decorated lights,
Dazzled the simplicity into intricate beauty,
And pretty babes walked past, thick pouting lips,
That pled for a lover’s kiss, o sweet, young ecstasy,
“There is no better paradise than the heaven around me.”
As I grew, age my greatest adversary,
Drained my life, opened my eyes and saw my fault,
It slapped upon me, brought truth unto my sight,
Told me what a fool I was.
Why did I seek pleasure in such a fragile toy?
Why did I seek laughter in momentary joy?
Those girls, sweet young fledglings,
Would they not grow old?
Would their lips not crease and dry?
Those glamour queens could but weep
As age destroyed their youth and stole the life,
From the very essence of the steps they had walked,
Into the neon shows, into the plasma screens,
Those faces, uncontrolled by will but by fate,
Ever coming, ever going, ever changing,
Until age caught hold and told them brusquely,
“Its your time to leave. No one cares if u jump off the cliff.”
Senseless I had been, to think man muster his way,
Don’t you see the impermanence of your body,
That would one day, grow old, frail and rot away,
Into the dust, back to earth, to cultivate young new plants,
That would once again, sprout and grow,
Replacing those immersed in sunlight’s glow,
And when winter comes, all disappears
“Alas, life sums up to nothing but nothing.”
