I've seen him on the streets
With three old cowboy hats
One on his head,
Two on a string
Trailing down his back
Well, I wondered about his story
And what those hats were all about
So, late one night I pulled aside
And he poured that story out
He said "The black one is all my Daddy left
the day he left us all.
And this old straw's from the spread I owned
before the bank auctioned it off.
The Stetson I always keep on top
I wore on my wedding day.
It was a gift
from the girl I loved
before she passed away."
(chorus)
"And Mister Hats ain't my name
but I'm called that just the same.
Heaven knows I played my hand
but the cards, they never came.
Some folks say I'm a drunken fool
and I guess that's how it seems,
but me and these hats
is all that's left
from a life of broken dreams."
He polished off his bottle
and shivered where he stood.
"I'm headin' for the shelter now, son,
this coat just ain't no good."
I handed him a twenty,
he took it and he told me "Thanks".
Then he set that Stetson against the wind
and I watched him walk away.
Chorus
Him and those hats
are all that's left
from a life...,
of broken dreams

A beautiful and melancholic poem- isn't this life all about- broken dreams and pieces left to be blown away by the wind. |
