Dogs and tramps

Contributed by rhymeandreason on Monday, 22nd March 2004 @ 09:16:52 PM in AEST
Topic: PetPoems

You know them dogs and tramps,
out on them freeway ramps.
Rarely get a glance,
from the people who pass by.

But my dogs didn't care,
they were into anywhere.
It's the tramp that's stuck
in no place all his life.

But my dogs didn't care,
as long as their tramp was there.
As long as that was so
they were complete.

The only thing they asked.
Their pay for all their tasks.
Was to have the right
to lay there at my feet.
...............................................................................

You leave the road,
and take the trail,
that forks, and forks again.
Then go on till you reach the dogs,
that may not let you in.

Now me they know,
so on I go,
until I reach my camp.
Where lantern lit,
and still unbit,
I stop my daily tramp.

If you ever find that trail,
that forks and forks again.
Bring a little something for those dogs.
They just might let you in.

This poem says as much about you as it does your dogs. Am I to expect you were at some point a hobo? Your previous poems suggest this . . . Poetic license apart - this stirs a potent stew in my mind. I always see homeless people with dogs, and wonder how they survive - by muitual co-operation, obviously. This poem brought a perspective that I have thought about tackling, but I've never been homeless, or a hobo, or a tramp - so I think it would be a bit of a stretch to try write from that situation or circumstance . . .
Whatever your station nowadays (a tramp with an internet connection? the mind boggles), you write sterling poetry, friend.
And yeah, i'll remember to bring something for the dogs - when the fork appears in the road . . .
Thanks for writing.

The joys of metaphor . . . *grins*

"But my dogs didn't care,
as long as their tramp was there.
As long as that was so
they were complete."

Again, great poem.
