COUNTING COUP

How does one count love?
Is it in the physical way one can see,
Or in the small things unsung?
If I tell you I love you,
Do you count the tally on both sides?
If I show you I love you,
Do you notice?
I love you the way a bear loves her cubs
Protecting from even the father
I love you the way a spider does,
Who holds on to life until her young are away
I love you the way a deer lures danger from her young
I could list all the ways, yet would you see?
I have a hole in my mind
Where the thoughts I most need fall through
I have a hole in my heart
That opens when you are disappointed
My fallibility wrestles with my yearning for perfection
I look at you and see your faults and love you for them
I look at mine and wonder how you can
If ever there were a reason for pity and scorn,
It is I
But I’m blest with the love of you
Though the storms rage
I patiently await the calm

It touches me when i reminisce about my mom - her anger, her concern and her love. |
