Death of a WWII Veteran

Grief
|
His chipmunk cheeks
were worried to white
flags hung below
his crystal blue eyes
encircled by dry redness,
lending his mien
a patriotic touch.
For those colors he
fought and lived and
with those colors
he fought and died.
And now, in death,
they’re draped over
his body as fellow
veterans discharge
their rifles to salute him.
He’s gently lowered to the
rich odor of
damp earth,
a trip back to Philippine
jungles, a trip back to
the country farm,
away from the dry
sterile
nursing home,
where he fought
and lost his final battle.

Hmmmm, hmmmmm, what would many martyrs for their own nations ever think of how it is politicians, and not some foreign aggressor, who is the enemy right now? |
